Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Wednesday October 11, 2023 After yesterday I went really tired and had a long lay in. (My enthusiasm is in minus figures for my exhibition launch event tomorrow, I can’t see it making any money. And doubt if anyone will come). All things must pass. Eventually I got out of bed and went to Hythe to pick up my printing from the Herald Office. It was a poster advertising my sketch portraits. Next, I bought some white wine vinegar in Waitrose. The cashier was abrupt dealing with me as quickly as possible. It would have been understandable if the shop was crowded but it wasn’t. Did she think I didn’t look important or interesting? Was she having a bad day? Or was it just her user manner? I continue by shopping in Lidl where I bought some apples, fish and tartar sauce. ‘Having a nice day?’ I asked the cashier. ‘Fantastic’ She replied scornfully. (working in a supermarket can’t be fun) I most people live miserable lives, all things considered. My life was like that too. I console myself with the thought there wasn’t anything I could have done differently. It’s no good saying- ‘if only this, if only that’ ‘I want this or I want that’. At the end of the day, it seems to me at the moment- life is a drag. (I do so like a good moan!) It’s being so cheerful keeps me going. I wondered along to the park bench near the Hythe Pier bus stop and pondered the question- ‘What do I need, to have a long, happy fulfilling life?’ There was a very long Harvard Study which gave the principal factor in for longevity to be maintaining a large number of social connections. I need the intellectual simulation of more good conversation. I need more friends. Often, I have to restrain myself from being sarcastic, and remind myself to try to be kind. Sometimes it takes a lot of effort. According to Allan Watts ‘Eternity is not for ever but right now’. I spent what seemed an age waiting for the bus home- I would love not to have to wait for buses, not that I do much when I get home, but still waiting is not fun. I’d taken my sketch book but left it in my rucksack. I felt pessimistic and bored. On the bus I sat next to Michael who has just been in hospital with pneumonia. When I got home, I had a jacket potato with vegetable curry.
