Ivor’s Daily Gallivant

Monday September 2, 2023: My exhibition is on 12/10/23 and not today.

A woke early this morning uncertain of whether the preview night for my exhibition at October Books tonight would be a complete flop. My efforts at publicising it was: ‘Too little, too late’. So far to the best of my knowledge there will be three people turning up.

(But we shall see.)

The first thing I did was write to Clare at October Books making a few suggestions about how I might make a modest amount of money from my exhibition or at least recoup some of my losses.

I also wrote about arrangements for doing portrait sketches of people, selling postcards of one of my paintings, and selling copies of my book of nonsense verse ‘The Buffoon Designs Book of Mostly Comic Verse’.

My paintings will be expensive they are one offs, and it took me a lot of time and effort learning to my craft which included doing a NHC In Design (Illustration) at the Art Institute at Bournemouth, but I’ve found that in an autumn sale canvas prints start at £4.50 which I’m going to add a little for myself and October Books.

(Later discovered the offer was only for today and I ordered two copies of what I believe will be the most popular of my pictures that I will sell at a yet to be decided price.)

My parents were small shop keepers and I remember my mother remarking that sometimes something doesn’t sell because it’s too cheap.

Put the price up and you’re cooking with gas!

I was just about to go to October Books when I had a look at my emails, and I have one from the local neighbourhood group telling me the announcement I made for my exhibition this evening had 359 views. Perhaps there was room for cautious optimism after all.

Then I thought it would be a good idea to phone them and let them know I was coming. I’d seen a picture in their newsletter of the poster advertising my exhibition for today and although I’d arranged for it to be moved forward to 12/10/23 thought the amendment hadn’t gone through.

One of the first people who I was expecting to come was my friend Andy, who had taken me to the Steam and Vintage Vehicle Show in Burly yesterday. He had read yesterday’s post and pointed out that his friend is named Kish and not Kirst as I had said.

The extra time could be put to good use and it was raining today

I spent the rest of the day until about 9 pm trying to correct my mistake. Hopefully everything is now okay.

But an army Marches on its stomach, and my thoughts turned to my evening meal. My plan was to try a new recipe which my Niece Amanda Lowe recommended to me, a South African dish called Bobotie. I took steps in gathering the ingredients it needed full cream milk (I usually use semi skimmed) and white bread (I usually use brown whole meal )

I ran to the Co-op and buy the missing ingredient. I found whole milk with 45p off and a small white loaf for 50p ( down from £1.95) I had bought the mince I was going to use from the clearance section too (this promised to be an especially tasty meal)

I took a further look at the recipe and it looked like it would take a lot of work and I was hungry. So I decided to have a gammon steak with pineapple, jacket potato and mixed vegetables which I could cook easily with very little preparation using the air fryer and microwave and get on with dealing with a message I received from Victoria Ugewoeme.

Victoria Ugewoeme replied to a message I sent a while back to her o on behalf of my friend Robert Freemantle about his singe ‘I’m needing you’ which is coming out on 13/10/23. She gave me her phone number; I called her we had a brief conversation and I forwarded her number to Rob.

All in all, what I thought was going to be a disastrous day, turned out pretty good.

Then I made myself another cup of tea and found there were only two tea bags left and thinking i would have one now and one in the morning and was about to throw the box out when I discovered I had loads more left.

One of my friends Helen Field put a like on my post about Drawing Portraits and I am wondering if it night be a lucrative outlet. Another idea I had which might have some mileage is hand rendered pictures of places to worship.

It me it turned out to be a day that couldn’t go wrong no matter how hard it tried. Perhaps there is a benign force guiding my destiny after all.

(Talking of destiny I warned my friend Rick Frewin to avoid mocking scripture when I remarked ‘The Lord Works in Mysterious Ways’ and he replied he’d been struck by lightning’ and it’s thrilling although it hurts for a few days afterwards…..Naturally the first thing I did was to look up the British Medical Journal puts the chances at one in ten million.)
