ABOUT image
At almost 68 I’m finding new ways to make the most of life. Which involve in raising money for charity, doing artwork, creative writing, political activism and having fun in as many ways that I can.
I’ve written a self published volume of nonsense verse. Which is available from the Lulu self publishing site. ‘The Buffoon Designs Book of Mostly Comic Verse’
Wrote a collection of short stories over lockdown ‘Thirty Mostly Quirky Tales’ which I’m giving away a free PDF of to anyone who makes a donation to my just giving page which is raising money for Solent Mind.
And am currently writing a memoir and working on a travel writing project to raise money for Diabetes UK.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Saturday November 4, 2023 As far as I remember I slept well last night, anyway I was in a whimsical mood this morning eventually surfacing at the crack of 10 - happy despite the incessant rain and my other trials and tribulations. I watched a really pucker vegetarian cookery video on my MasterClass subscription by the Guardian vegetarian food writer. In the parlance of lesser mortals such as myself the dish was steamed, grilled carrots with special yogurt (labneh), cider vinegar and honey topped with dukkah (an Egyptian spicy nutty mixture) I set up a minimum donation Direct Debit with Friends of the Earth (£3 per month) to campaign against Global Warming. (After watching the video, I had a runny boiled egg for breakfast- ‘you can’t win ‘em all’) Life without water (well a limited supply of water) continued I spent most of the day helping a friend get more bottled water, and only finally managed it when another friend told me their water had been reconnected and she had some bottles over. It was an uphill battle, during which, I found a lady looking for water for her 93-year-old mother and told her where there was a supply of bottled water without a queue. Life went on, and I continued listening to the MasterClass course about food choices (selective Eating by Michael Pollen) and went to make a tea. The kitchen tap gurgled so I turned it on, and much to my delight my water was running again. I finished the Selective Eating Course and treated myself to a piping hot shower- Boy! (It felt good).

Monday October 23, 2023

The alarm sounded, at first I didn’t realise it was morning and when I did, I stayed in bed – where I was warm, and cosy compared with the cold room. Finally, my conscience (such as it is got the best of me and I got up, about an hour later)

I had a piping hot shower and a change of clothes and felt amazing and put the television on for a while. My usual Monday routine is to go for lunch at October Books and I ran to the bus stop and reached it about two minutes before the bus was due. At the stop was a lady wheelchair user and her carer, a few moments later another carer arrived and the wheelchair user who she was looking after had to go down the pavement and come back on himself because of the uneven pavement.

The two carers and the lady wheelchair user had a chat, and I had a few words with the lad in his wheelchair. He told me he was a contestant in the Paralympics, in the butcher contest. Which apparently is like bowls.

The bus arrived about 40 minutes late, and I kept myself busy sketching some of the passengers while it made its way to Southampton.

Lunch at October Books was uneventful and, on the way, home I stopped at Dibden Purlieu and photographed St Andrews. And had an ice cream.

Once home I had a cup of tea and during Bootleg Art Club did some work on my forest pool picture. And had a tin of chicken and vegetable soup.

In the evening I wrote a speculative email to St Andrews in Dibden Purlieu which tried to get commissions for my local church paintings.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant:

Is account of my daily antics and adventures.

I will be 68 next birthday and intend to make my retirement as interesting and productive, as possible. Nobody knows how long they’re got or how long we will maintain their health. I intend contribute, in some small way and to sum total of human happiness, with my blog and artwork.

Or at least raise a laugh or two.

If you never try your failure is assured, but if you try there’s at least a possibility of success.

Tuesday October 31, 2021

To Do List
(1)	Collect pictures from October Books (done)
(2)	Waterside Art Group (didn’t go I was tired, and it was raining)
(3)	Buy edamame beans Waitrose. (Slept instead)
(4)	Buy Tahini Waitrose (slept instead)

I woke up and went back to bed after having a shower for another nap. Rick knocked on the door and we went to collect my pictures from October Books. Rick fixed the saddle on my exercise bike and when he’d gone, I had another nap.

There was a piece in my newsfeed about Clint Eastwood staying active in his nineties by ‘not letting the old man in’. It sounded convincing in theory but personally I don’t live up to that, as today clearly shows.

There was a letter asking me to book another blood test. I phoned the GP surgery and I’m to restart my Metformin. My blood sugar is high again which is most probably the reason for my recent tiredness.

This evening I checked effects of high blood sugar and found, tiredness, thirst and toilet all of which have in retrospect been more pronounced with me recently. I also Googled natural remedies for high blood sugar which included and will now increase my exercise levels and alter my diet, which together with the Metformin will soon get things under control again.

That will get me nice and active again, hopefully.

The rain started again, and I decided to skip the Art Group this evening.

I made a vegetable crumble with onions, garlic, frozen mixed vegetables, kale, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes, sweet potatoes, home grown green beans, peppers, vegetable stock, chilli flakes, basil, lemon juice, black pepper and a bay leaf. It was topped with a mixture of porridge oats, flour, breadcrumbs, cashews, and pumpkin seeds. Blended with butter and grated cheese.

My creation smelt magnificent, and I took it out of the oven with a feeling of glee.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Saturday 25th February 2023: The day of a pleasant surprise. According to my organiser Saturday mornings are down for going to The Soul Café. But this year prior to today haven’t actually gone. My day started at about six when I woke up. I thought getting up at such an extreme hour was too Spartan: so stayed in bed until the alarm went off at seven. Although I put the boiler on before getting and set the timer for half an hour which give me a hot shower. (Prior to today I didn’t know it was possible to have the alarm and timer set at the same time) I left home in time for the half past ten bus. And met Rory on the bus who was also going to The Soul Café. When we got to The Soul Café it was full of people and difficult to find a place to sit. I started a brief conversation with a retired lorry driver Brian who had spent all his life living locally. Rory got into conversation with him while Sarah Brown and Phil sat in another part of the room….. I asked if it would be okay to hand out the post cards promoting my blog and it was . And did a little sketching of the umbrellas that were hanging from the rafters. Then I went for lunch in the St Andrews Coffee Shop with Phil and Stewart, and as I waited much to my surprise and delight Morag who had worked at Marcella said: ‘Hallo’ It had been years since seeing her last and a pleasant surprise. I gave her one of the promotional cards. Which she liked. After St Andrews i caught the bus into Hythe did some shopping in Lidl and had a cup of tea in Black Wax Records and Coffee, gave them a few more of the cards and caught the bus home

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Monday September 25, 2023. I woke bursting with energy at 4.00am. And wrote the text to my email to promote my friend Rob Freemantle’s single which comes out on 13/10/23 called ‘I’m missing you’. I sent it to him to be checked and he told me I’d got the name of the song wrong and hadn’t included his artist's name ‘Matrafox’. I joined a couple of local Facebook groups: -New Forest History and Heritage -Left Politics Listened to Lockley Hall by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Prompted by the line ‘Spring when a young man’s fancy turns to love’….I finding as a dyslexic, being able to listen to poetry on the internet is really helpful. And am looking forward to seeing what is available on the RNIB talking books library Went to Veg Out at October and saw Ron and Chris Tucker on the bus into Southampton I asked Ron if he was related to Geoff Tucker who is something to do with New Forest History and Heritage. I had a pleasant greeting when I got to October Books and my food was very nice. When I’d finished I looked through the food on sale in the shop and picked a packet of dates. Unfortunately when I came to pay for them I found I’d lost my bank card. When l got home, I ordered another card and realised I wouldn’t be able to go to get my Covid jab tomorrow because it needed a train journey which which without money I couldn’t do. After snuggling finding my appointment and NHS numbers I cancelled my appointment. My next problem was- I was short of bread and at first thought I could get more at the Free Cook Up on Thursday, but then realised it clashed with the Unite Community Meeting which was also on Thursday. I messaged Lucie Mann and she said I could to get a free loaf at Hythe Library.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Friday September 22, 2023 This morning I planned make The Gallivant more interesting by describing how I ran stark naked down Hythe Prescient with my hair dyed blue with wode and managed to talk the police into giving me bail with the help of a passing quick-thinking legal eagle who went on advised me that it might be prejudicial to my court hearing to say too much about it. I met a charming young lady at the bus stop in Holbury who has a degree in Geology from St. Andrews University (one of the more deluxe educational establishments) and plans to become a mining engineer in Australia. We touched briefly whether it was ecologically sound policy to continue mineral extraction. She explained that with current technology precious metals are needed. An interesting and intelligent young lady, who all being well has an interesting life ahead of her. Who I promised to mention in my blog…. Hallo Alyssa. I hope that’s the correct spelling. Alyssa means warrior in Greek as you may or may not know. For a while now I have been concerned about my eyesight and spoke to an advisor at the RNIB and who advised me to speak to my optician. In the interest of personal privacy, I will say nothing more about it except I left happy. My second mission for the day was to deliver my collection of comic verse ‘The Buffoon Designs Book of Mostly Comic Verse’ to Jonny who is shortly to more on from October Books to do a PhD in English Literature at York. Ever keen for a little variety I used Hythe Ferry to travel into Southampton, which was more expensive but much nicer. In the waiting room I met a group of cyclists from Portsmouth and remarked what a nice day it was to go cycling in the forest. Who I also promised a mention. I read a plaque about famous Royals people who had visited Hythe Pier. There was one from the Spanish Royal Family who the people kept trying to assassinate, including once on his wedding day. He eventually took the hint and abdicate. And there was Kaiser Wilhelm who started the First World War- I expect he thought it was a good idea (bless him) My knowledge of history is sketchy, but I seem to remember it was all because of Archduke Ferdinand getting assassinated one of his relatives i imagine. The overly self-important Royal types do take umbrage at being assassinated. I got to October Books and met up with Jonny who was delighted with his book and I caught the next bus home because I needed my epilepsy medication. Somewhere in the excitement of the week I thought it was Thursday and it’s Friday which is conclusive proof if it wasn’t already needed that I’m a nincompoop. What is Hell- life is fun.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Tuesday September 19, 2023 To do list (1) Housework (2) Phone RNIB (3) Arrange appointment for Covid jab(done) (4) Phone double glazing contractors (5) My niece is visiting.( she did) (6) Phone bank about resetting password. After writing my blog yesterday I realised I’d missed out some interesting details. In my conversation with Glyn at October Books he mentioned a psychological experiment where a group of subjects were asked to do an engaging task and were so engrossed, they didn’t notice a man dressed in a gorilla suit wondering amongst them. And were amazed when a video was shown of what had happened. He described how Amazon advertise their services saying you only need to spend a few seconds to get things. I bought some brinjal pickle yesterday and didn’t know what it was, so googled it. Brinjal is the Indian vegetable that was transported by the Arabs from India to Spain and then further afraid where it was renamed aubergine or eggplants. And ate the rest of the prickly pears from yesterday, I think I could acquire a taste for them. I didn’t sleep at all again last night. I sat daydreaming and eventually after a struggle booked a Covid Jab at Netley Pharmacy for 26/9/2023. I ate a raw carrot and some pumpkin seeds due to reading an article about diet and glaucoma. The weather has taken a turn for the worse and it’s not very warm, and my throw blanket has given up the ghost. My niece and her husband came and treated me to fish and chips. Shane my niece’s husband noticed a large pile of books which l’d bought from World of Books and asked me if I’d read them. They included ‘A moveable feast ‘ by Ernest Hemingway and ‘Reading like a writer’ by Francine Prose. Shane clearly know both books extremely well. On the way out Mandy (my niece) described a recipe for bobotie and when I messaged her sent a link through to BBC Good Food.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Sunday September 17, 2023 Oh, Silly insomnia. Why can’t I sleep? Boy It gets tiresome, Counting those sheep Once again, it’s most probably the rule rather than the exception, I couldn’t get to sleep. So, I got up and dressed and decided to put my time and energy to good use and do the housework. Starting with the bathroom. The first thing I did was set the timer for half an hour- then I got to work. I noticed there were clothes in the machine and took them out to dry. Then I wondered round like a headless chicken and eventually returned to work on the bathroom. The timer sounded and I stopped for a peppermint tea (I would have had ordinary tea) but I ran out of milk. I went to get the milk out of the fridge before I remembered I’d finished it. I resumed work on the bathroom and cleaned the bath and sink, but when I was about to clean the taps, the alarm sounded. Once again, I went to the fridge for milk and realised the error of my ways. [having a poor short-term memory is normal for many dyslexics and my experiences with mine this evening were completely normal] Before I got back to work on today's blog post I remembered more of my conversation with Rob Freemantle. He said he’s self-releasing a single on October 13 called ‘missing you’ and it’s already been played on Italian Radio. I went to his website and discovered he’s learning Japanese and is interested in board games. When I have time, I’ll try challenge him to a game of chess. It would be an opportunity for me to read the rest of ‘Chess for Dummies’ I eventually got to sleep and woke up at about midday. And it was tipping it down, but I was fed up drinking peppermint tea so ran to the Coop and bought a canister of milk, a chicken slice in the hot food section for lunch and some naan bread and mozzarella cheese from clearance. On my way out I did my customarily (when the weathers like this) Fred Astaire impersonation with a few words off ‘singing in the rain’. When I got home, I had a normal cup of tea and intended to do the hoovering before Andy came but he arrived before I did any. We had a good chinwag and settled down to our Scrabble then something strangephappened I won the first game. We had some tea and then Andy won the second game. I had my evening meal of a Linda McCartney veggie burger, a jacket potato and some of my homemade ratatouille. Andy left after another tea.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Saturday September 16, 2023-a lot more active and interesting day than yesterday After sleeping well, i woke up and initially was reluctant to get up, but it was Saturday my day for going to the Soul Café so got up and noticed some mail on the doormat. Which included a handwritten letter from my old friend Jim. He doesn’t use the phone or internet, so writing is his only means of communication. He had an operation recently and is just out of hospital. I made my way to the Soul Café and did some sketches. Several people who I hadn’t spoken to before said a few words to me and I had some forbidden fruit in the form of a piece of carrot cake (I’m diabetic but they say ‘a little of what you fancy does you good’ As my grandmother used to say – ‘how the poor live’. I stayed at The Soul Café until closing time and ever keen to maintain my health I ran to St. Andrews Coffee House. Outside as I was running past the tables outside, I heard someone call my name. It was my friend Andy with his daughters Megan and Eva, and his mother. He bought me a bowl of homemade soup and a pot of tea. Megan was doing a voluntary waitress job there. I caught the bus into Hythe as I wanted to buy Jim a card and had a coffee at Black Wax where I did another sketch at the bus stop at Hythe Pier someone else called me. It was Rob Freemantle I didn’t recognise him at first because his beard has grown so long. He said he was thinking of having it tethered, to which I replied, you should in the interest of public safety. On the bus at Knighton Grange Tim and Julie got on, and Tim came and sat next to me for a chat, he asked what I had planned for the evening I said write my blog (for today and yesterday) do a little homework and some work on my painting. It’s now 21.44 I shall do half an hour housework and then work until 23.00 (my bedtime) on my painting.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Thursday September 14, 2023 Unfortunately, after cleaning my freezer, I was wide awake and got into messenger conversations, that lasted through the night. I considered if the best way to get to Spain would be by ferry flight or coach. And learned that niagara Falls are in Canada. That they drive on the right in Canada. I saw a YouTube video about Uruguay and drink loads of tea. To do list, 14 September 2023. (1) dental appointment (filling replacement), 12.40 Totton (done) (2) Phone RNIB about glaucoma advice. (not done) (3) Free cook up Blackfield Baptist church 15.30. (done) (4) Phone bank about getting account unblocked (not done) Interesting piece on morning TV about the children’s author and illustrator Liz Pickon who has designed the t- shirt for this year's Children in Need promotion. After the program I had a look at her website. Next, I emailed the Herald an Advertiser office in Hythe and soon I received a reply saying my printing had been done. With the HSBC, the last bank in Hythe closed. I had to get some cash using The Post Office, a trick I’d come up with through a Google search. When I got into Hythe I decided to buy some breadcrumbs and pumpkin seeds in Waitrose. And bought some mango and ginger pickle too. Unable to find the breadcrumbs I asked an assistant where they were she gave me directions but despite trying for several minutes still couldn’t find them. I went back and asked again and a distinguished elderly gentleman who I hadn’t seen because of a row of shelves or maybe my glaucoma or perhaps because of momentary in attention- cleared his throat as if to say- ‘I was here first’. I apologised and took my place behind him. (In the belief my there must be worst of crimes than inadvertent queue jumping.) When it was his turn to be served, I overheard him saying to the shop assistant. ‘that’s the second time that’s happened to me’. (Or was it the shop assistant who said it to him?) I’m deaf in my right ear and once again wasn’t paying ‘proper attention’. But my hearing was good enough to hear what was said about me. On reflection I don’t know if I was in the wrong or not, or if my glaucoma was to blame, or I was slightly sleep deprived. Also, I was a little impatient because I could have done with using the bathroom. Eventually I left Waitrose and saw Jill an old friend sitting on a park bench, under the tree in the sunlight sowing sequins onto what must been her latest embroidery masterpiece- and intricate floral design. We had a long chat, and I sang my ‘Wonderful Wonderful Boris Johnson’ song which amused her. She recently developed problems with her eyesight and is awaiting treatment. Pete, Jill’s husband joined us and they went on to their next appointment. I ran along to the Herald and Advertiser office and picked up my printing. And waited at the bus stop worried I might miss my dental appointment. I got to the dentist, and everything went according to plan. I caught the bus getting on at Totton and off at Blackfield and bought a ham sandwich and a cup of tea in Wendy’s Café. (which at over £6 seemed expensive) After which I went on to the free cook up at Blackfield Baptist Church where I had a green pepper stuffed with couscous and mushroom, baked leek, roast potatoes, chicken with gravy. Lucie came and ate her lunch with me (I was sat alone) and I told her about my ongoing problem with getting the housework done. I came home and after another meal slept until about eight.

Thursday September 29, 2023

Woke before 6.00 am and had breakfast, took my tablets and made todays to do list.

Things to do September 28, 2023

(1)	Wrap paintings really to be taken to October Books (done as much as I could)
(2)	Listen to the next instalment from The Grapes of Wrath…done
(3)	Phone October Books (10.05)….done
(4)	Attend Unite Community (12.15) …..done
(5)	Get more cash out of the bank (leave for bus 10.15)…..done

Started wrapping the paintings in bubble wrap ready for my exhibition and set my timer to sound when it is time to phone October Books, and when it’s time for my bus. I stopped work on the wrapping and went for a run. I felt superb afterwards.

With a few pictures over I found I’d run out of bubble wrap and stopped, it will have to do.

I caught the bus into Southampton went to the bank so I was ready to go to The Steam and Vintage Vehicle Show in Burly on Sunday. After my visit to the bank I attended the Unite Community Meeting but felt very tired and didn’t take much in. (I was up before 5.00 am this morning)

At the bus stop (for the bus home) a bloke let me go in front of him, I was holding my folding chair/cain and thinking he thought I was disabled i said-‘I’m not disabled’
He replied-
‘ I am’
And then admitted he was joking and just being polite.

I ran back from the bus stop in Holbury and when I was back home I was exhausted. So I had a long sleep.

I made myself an evening meal, of the three chicken thighs cooked in the air fryer, brown rice, chicken gravy granules, frozen peppers, frozen chestnut mushrooms, mixed vegetables, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, lemon juice and black pepper.

(I’d seen a video about cooking with vinegar and this was my first experiment with apple cider vinegar and it was delicious)

As they were cooking I cleaned the corner of my bedroom where my bureau is. It was much needed there was an accumulation of years of spiderwebs there.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Friday September 29, 2023: taking my paintings to October Books. Woke just before six and felt pleasantly rested. I decided to listen to Leonard Cohens ‘Lady Midnight’ as I wasn’t sure how the lyrics went. It’s a curious song which I don’t exactly understand, but nonetheless enjoy enormously. One of my English Teachers once remarked about a D.H.Lawrence story the mark of good literature is you can enjoy it without understanding it…. I pondered what I’d read of The Grapes of Wrath and how Steinbeck described ordinary people (men and women, old and young) with all their noisiness and messiness, dreams and fears. Their clothes, their language-they are like the people on the bus, and the high street. Facing challenges, getting on with things as well as they can. Books are like their writers- to read them is to share the observations and idiosyncrasies of their writers. In an interview J. B. Priestly once remarked- ‘I see more than most people’. I was 16 and a snot nosed illiterate, when I first encountered The Grapes of Wrath and it’s only now that the extent of my ignorance has become apparent. The book was one of the set pieces in C.S.E English. Which was the qualification for less gifted 16-year-olds. Our English teacher (according to a friend of mine was the Cox-on for Oxford in the boat race) He hardly spoke- I will never know why- was he shy or did regard teaching us as an indignity, or something that wasn’t important, or was he lazy. I found him intimidating and unapproachable. During English classes we took turns to read a paragraph at a time of the Grapes. Which for me was embarrassing. Or get on with reading or writing in silence. We had a weekly swimming lesson before English once a week. And the caretaker would routinely put too much chlorine in the water which hurt my eyes and I had difficulty focusing them during class. I listened to some more of the audio book whilst cleaning the bathroom. There was a description of playing the harmonica, guitar and violin. And a group of religious extremists looking on at a dance with distain. My friend Andy who wasn’t feeling great came but despite that drove me to October Books with the paintings to be exhibited. He drove via the motorway. A bought a packet of dates in October Books but wasn’t able to open them until I got home. The sun shone brightly as we returned from Portswood and I was well on putting on my exhibition. Although I hadn’t published it properly.

Monday September 2, 2023: My exhibition is on 12/10/23 and not today.

A woke early this morning uncertain of whether the preview night for my exhibition at October Books tonight would be a complete flop. My efforts at publicising it was: ‘Too little, too late’. So far to the best of my knowledge there will be three people turning up.

(But we shall see.)

The first thing I did was write to Clare at October Books making a few suggestions about how I might make a modest amount of money from my exhibition or at least recoup some of my losses.

I also wrote about arrangements for doing portrait sketches of people, selling postcards of one of my paintings, and selling copies of my book of nonsense verse ‘The Buffoon Designs Book of Mostly Comic Verse’.

My paintings will be expensive they are one offs, and it took me a lot of time and effort learning to my craft which included doing a NHC In Design (Illustration) at the Art Institute at Bournemouth, but I’ve found that in an autumn sale canvas prints start at £4.50 which I’m going to add a little for myself and October Books.

(Later discovered the offer was only for today and I ordered two copies of what I believe will be the most popular of my pictures that I will sell at a yet to be decided price.)

My parents were small shop keepers and I remember my mother remarking that sometimes something doesn’t sell because it’s too cheap.

Put the price up and you’re cooking with gas!

I was just about to go to October Books when I had a look at my emails, and I have one from the local neighbourhood group telling me the announcement I made for my exhibition this evening had 359 views. Perhaps there was room for cautious optimism after all.

Then I thought it would be a good idea to phone them and let them know I was coming. I’d seen a picture in their newsletter of the poster advertising my exhibition for today and although I’d arranged for it to be moved forward to 12/10/23 thought the amendment hadn’t gone through.

One of the first people who I was expecting to come was my friend Andy, who had taken me to the Steam and Vintage Vehicle Show in Burly yesterday. He had read yesterday’s post and pointed out that his friend is named Kish and not Kirst as I had said.

The extra time could be put to good use and it was raining today

I spent the rest of the day until about 9 pm trying to correct my mistake. Hopefully everything is now okay.

But an army Marches on its stomach, and my thoughts turned to my evening meal. My plan was to try a new recipe which my Niece Amanda Lowe recommended to me, a South African dish called Bobotie. I took steps in gathering the ingredients it needed full cream milk (I usually use semi skimmed) and white bread (I usually use brown whole meal )

I ran to the Co-op and buy the missing ingredient. I found whole milk with 45p off and a small white loaf for 50p ( down from £1.95) I had bought the mince I was going to use from the clearance section too (this promised to be an especially tasty meal)

I took a further look at the recipe and it looked like it would take a lot of work and I was hungry. So I decided to have a gammon steak with pineapple, jacket potato and mixed vegetables which I could cook easily with very little preparation using the air fryer and microwave and get on with dealing with a message I received from Victoria Ugewoeme.

Victoria Ugewoeme replied to a message I sent a while back to her o on behalf of my friend Robert Freemantle about his singe ‘I’m needing you’ which is coming out on 13/10/23. She gave me her phone number; I called her we had a brief conversation and I forwarded her number to Rob.

All in all, what I thought was going to be a disastrous day, turned out pretty good.

Then I made myself another cup of tea and found there were only two tea bags left and thinking i would have one now and one in the morning and was about to throw the box out when I discovered I had loads more left.

One of my friends Helen Field put a like on my post about Drawing Portraits and I am wondering if it night be a lucrative outlet. Another idea I had which might have some mileage is hand rendered pictures of places to worship.

It me it turned out to be a day that couldn’t go wrong no matter how hard it tried. Perhaps there is a benign force guiding my destiny after all.

(Talking of destiny I warned my friend Rick Frewin to avoid mocking scripture when I remarked ‘The Lord Works in Mysterious Ways’ and he replied he’d been struck by lightning’ and it’s thrilling although it hurts for a few days afterwards…..Naturally the first thing I did was to look up the British Medical Journal puts the chances at one in ten million.)

A recap on yesterday

It’s been another of my sleepless nights. It’s now 5.19 am and I’m not sure off hand when I last slept. Sleep eludes me. Yesterday took it out of me. I woke before 5.00 yesterday and worked solidly apart from cooking, eating and until after midnight.

And running to the Co-op and back to buy some ingredients for a recipe I want to try.

My cooking was quick and easy a gammon steak with pineapple in the air fryer and a jacket potato and the last of a packet of mixed vegetables.

But boy I got a lot done!

A couple of new ideas to try out that came to me last night

(1)	Portrait sketches (this might require renting a stall at Hythe market or a table in St. Johns) and finding somewhere to store it in Hythe…. I’ve got friends in Hythe who might let me store my equipment.
(I shall see if I can find an article and think some more)
(2)	Sketches of Places of Worship
For this I would need a portfolio of church buildings- which I may be able to find. It would then be a matter of posting them on a business page and promoting it.

The Events of the day

This morning after being awake a hell of a long time I crawled off to bed and slept until my alarm sounded telling me it was 12.00 and lunchtime. Lunch was a bacon sandwich, an apple and a cup of tea.

I was mulling over if it would be possible to have a card reader. And a few moments later after doing a Google search which most primary school children could have managed. I found a website and filled out an online form, which resulted in a message- ‘an advisor would be with you shortly’.

(Only problem was that by 17.46 there was no sign of the advisor)

(It looked like my dream of making money from my artwork was coming closer to come true)

An email came through and I have now booked a Covid jab in Boots Southampton next week.

My evening meal

Made my first attempt at Bobotie I didn’t have one of the ingredients and it took a fair amount of time, what’s wrong with taking time over something especially when you enjoy it. In spelt really good as the oven made its magical transformation.

It was a good day, I’m a little closer to making some money from my artwork and I had the promise of a delicious meal.

After my meal

I was absolutely shattered and slept through the evening and woke, at around midnight. During my sleep I must have mulled over my experience with the Credit Card Terminal Company and have decided later in the day (it’s 1.32 am now) I will find another company…

They said after I had called me ‘An advisor will be with you shortly’.

I like people and businesses who ‘say what they mean and mean what they say’. And that wasn’t my experience with the company who I contacted.

(In my experience nothing in life is ever straightforward, but I’m always up for another challenge and will fight another day)

During my sleep I must have mulled over my experience with the Credit Card Terminal Company and have decided later in the day (it’s 1.32 am now) I will find another company… They said after I had called me ‘An advisor will be with you shortly’. I like people and businesses who ‘say what they mean and mean what they say’. And that wasn’t my experience with the company who I contacted. (In my experience nothing in life is ever straightforward, but I’m always up for another challenge and will fight another day)

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Wednesday October 4, 2023 After another sleepless night. I decided to go to bed and sleep until midday when I planned to go to October Books. The Pin arrived for my new bank card so I thought I would be able to get my haircut this afternoon. Finally, I didn’t go to October Books today. At about midday, fed up with having no milk for my tea I ran and to the Co-op and bought some, along with a chicken and bacon pasty and an avocado from the reduced section. Early this morning Dan messaged me and said he’d been laid low after having his booster Covid jab. I thought it best to cook and freeze some food so that if I was laid low after my jab I wouldn’t have to bother with food preparation. In the process of making a note of this I realised my Covid jab was on the October 12 the same day as my exhibition launch day. I attempted to reschedule the jab, but the NHS website was down, so I put a note on my organiser to try again tomorrow. I phoned St. John’s Hall in Hythe and left a message on their answering machine about hiring a table for Hythe Market on Tuesday. So, I can sell sketch portraits of people there. I needed some J-cloths and ran to the One Stop in the precinct to buy some and bought a couple of pork pies and a Mars bar. And checked my balance it was about £30. My pension is due on Friday but it’s cutting things fine. Next, cleared out the dish washer and took three pairs of trousers that were out to, dry in and cooked some curry as I had two sweet potatoes in the fridge which I didn’t want to go to waste. I felt so tired, there was so much to do, it was never ending, always more things to do. No time for anything but work…. life had always been like this…. things half done. It was halfway through the first week of October and another day was drawing to a close. My mood lifted as I cooked and once the meal was ready, I felt much more like my old self.

Monday October 9, 2023

Woke up tired without any enthusiasm to get out of bed. Yesterday and Saturday were long days which had taken it out of me. My right knee ached, and I wasn’t very warm. I needed of a change of clothes and all my jeans were damp and, in the conservatory, drying.

I was down and ate a bowl of raisin and almond granola with an apple followed by some cheese, toast and hot pickle for lunch.

‘As I get older mornings like this and worse will happen more often’- I thought, dispondantly.

The whole bungalow was a shambles.

It was too late to go to Veg Out October Books. I sat around drinking tea but eventually pulled myself together and got my clothes dried in the laundrette. George the owner said fine weather is forecast for the rest of the week.

By 15.18 I’d had a shower, put on clean clothes and felt almost human. There was an email telling me, the posters advertising my sketch portraits had been printed, but it was too late to pick them up today.

Tomorrow I’m playing Scrabble with Andy and thought it would be nice to meet him for lunch in Be Be’s in Hythe, pick up my printing, and come back to play Scrabble. We went through some alternative plans, like buying a snack in Lidl, or me making us sandwiches. But eventually agreed it would be best to have lunch at Be Be’s and eat outside, to take advantage of the weather.

This evening meal was a little inventive (and very pleasant) baked beans mixed with frozen mixed vegetables and cider vinegar, a jacket potato and gammon steak.

I spent the evening making a Cumberland sausage casserole with a packet of Cumberland sausages, onion, garlic, baby sweet corn, boiled potatoes, half a tin of baked beans, half a tin of chopped tomatoes, frozen yellow peppers, frozen mixed vegetables, mixed with an oxo cube dissolved in boiled water, a drop of red wine vinegar, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, basil, paprika, salt and black pepper.

My mood had lifted from earlier in the day as the smell of my cooking spend through the house.

Tuesday October 10, 2023

Once again, I couldn’t sleep and so got up, got dressed and made a cup of tea. I was up for the rest of the night but the time to good use, by first writing a handwritten letter to my friend Richard whose doesn’t have a computer or use the phone.

Next, I joined a Facebook group called Southampton Heritage Photos, which provides a constant supply of information about Southampton’s past. And I accepted a friend request from Tracy a lady I see on the bus sometimes. I sent her a copy of yesterday’s Gallivant on messenger which she liked. (Perhaps I’ve got another reader!?)

At this rate before I know it my readership figures will soar into double digits!

Replacing the controller on my electric throw blanket is an ongoing problem- which I may have found an answer to. I googled ‘how to replace a controller for a throw blanket.’ Which led me to a promising site, that I sent an email to with a labelled photo of the connector of the controller, to illustrate wanted.

Hopefully it will soon be sorted out and for a lot less than the price of a new throw blanket.

I booked a blood test to check my blood sugar over the last three months for 19/10/2023, when the health centre opened.

And requested the Herald to print the letter I wrote to Julian Lewis about my glaucoma. That didn’t get through.

My plan for today was meet Andy for lunch at Be Be’s at 12.00. It was market day and Be Be’s was full of people. I got a coffee in Tilley’s the Baker and sat Facing Be Be’s and drank it while I waited.

Because of the situation in Be Be’s I suggested we get Fish and Chips at Philpots . There was a lady busker playing saxophone with a karaoke machine in the precinct, who we sat listening to as we ate. I was struck by how expensive my meal was, fish and chips with a can of Diet Coke set me back over £10.

Just before we arrived at my place, I realised I hadn’t picked up my printing which was why I went to Hythe today.

I was exhausted and asked Andy to leave after giving him a cup of tea as I didn’t want to risk having an epileptic fit and messing up all my plans for the rest of the week. (My exhibition launch night tomorrow, my Covid booster jab on Friday and my blood test on 19/10/2023)

Feeling weary my recent experiences seem to have been a question of suffering fools gladly and I’m not sure if I’m amongst them.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Wednesday October 11, 2023 After yesterday I went really tired and had a long lay in. (My enthusiasm is in minus figures for my exhibition launch event tomorrow, I can’t see it making any money. And doubt if anyone will come). All things must pass. Eventually I got out of bed and went to Hythe to pick up my printing from the Herald Office. It was a poster advertising my sketch portraits. Next, I bought some white wine vinegar in Waitrose. The cashier was abrupt dealing with me as quickly as possible. It would have been understandable if the shop was crowded but it wasn’t. Did she think I didn’t look important or interesting? Was she having a bad day? Or was it just her user manner? I continue by shopping in Lidl where I bought some apples, fish and tartar sauce. ‘Having a nice day?’ I asked the cashier. ‘Fantastic’ She replied scornfully. (working in a supermarket can’t be fun) I most people live miserable lives, all things considered. My life was like that too. I console myself with the thought there wasn’t anything I could have done differently. It’s no good saying- ‘if only this, if only that’ ‘I want this or I want that’. At the end of the day, it seems to me at the moment- life is a drag. (I do so like a good moan!) It’s being so cheerful keeps me going. I wondered along to the park bench near the Hythe Pier bus stop and pondered the question- ‘What do I need, to have a long, happy fulfilling life?’ There was a very long Harvard Study which gave the principal factor in for longevity to be maintaining a large number of social connections. I need the intellectual simulation of more good conversation. I need more friends. Often, I have to restrain myself from being sarcastic, and remind myself to try to be kind. Sometimes it takes a lot of effort. According to Allan Watts ‘Eternity is not for ever but right now’. I spent what seemed an age waiting for the bus home- I would love not to have to wait for buses, not that I do much when I get home, but still waiting is not fun. I’d taken my sketch book but left it in my rucksack. I felt pessimistic and bored. On the bus I sat next to Michael who has just been in hospital with pneumonia. When I got home, I had a jacket potato with vegetable curry.

Thursday October 12, 2023

The day started off well with my alarm sounding at 7.00 am, when I got up and went for a run round the block and had a shower, and felt great afterwards. Today was the day of the launch event for my exhibition at October Books.

Breakfast was a bowl of granola with raisins and almonds with a cup of tea. For lunch I had an egg mayonnaise sandwich.

I felt tired after my run so set my timer for an hour and had a nap before setting out.

I caught the bus and it’s card reader wasn’t working, the driver queried if it was my bus pass. He said I look a lot older than the picture on the pass but he let me travel.

During the journey I tried to work out how old the photo was, and didn’t know it must have been over twelve years since it was taken.

When I got to Portswood I had a Chilli con Carne in Poppins, with a coffee. The food was okay but it was a small portion, expensive for what it was, and gave me diarrhoea. (or perhaps it was the egg sandwich I had earlier in the day)

When I got to October Books, I met Clare who made me a cup of tea. My exhibition had a small audience. (It was a question of quality rather than quantity of person) So far I’ve sold a few of my postcards and a portrait sketch but am a long way from reaching my break even point.

Much to my delight I discovered The Gallivant has more readers than I imagined….Thanks folks any support and encouragement is greatly appreciated.

I thought I was going to have a long and tortuous bus ride home with a couple of long waits at rain drenched bus stops for good measure. But my luck was good and Rick who I often chat with on messenger gave me a lift home.

I invited him in for tea and we had a chinwag and he said he would try and fix my windows.

Although not an ideal outcome, it was a pleasant evening, I’m glad my artwork has been seen, and if I sell one of my paintings I will make an overall profit.

Sunday October 15, 2023: The Christmas of the abandoned Yuletide traffic cone.

Truly I would like to help make the world a better place but don’t have the inclination to be keep up to date with world news. It would only distress me. So, I ignore it mostly continuing writing my goofy blog and doing my goofy artwork. My hope is what I do will give pleasure, inspiration and amusement to some of my readers and viewers.

I prised myself out of my pit at around 10 and surveyed the street from my kitchen window and my gaze fell upon one of my neighbours Glen. We exchanged a few words. He had what turned out to be a gem, underfoot.

It was a misplaced traffic cone, which was a leftover from a recent bout of traffic repairs. Glen was worried it would be put to bad uses like being put on the roof of a car if left.

I took pity on the poor thing and took it in to shelter from the cruel and wicked world. With the result I now possess my very own traffic cone. Which in due course may be christened.

In a messenger conversation with a friend Lisa who I know vaguely I happened to mention my new adoptee. And she had the brilliant idea it would make a mini-Christmas tree.

(I thought I could spray it green and cut up the reflective strip into starlets)

I messaged my friend Rick who asked if my newly acquired adoptee was the fruit of a night of drunken mayhem, and debauchery on my part.

Which i denied adding that would have been in keeping with one of my former selves.

I have amongst my friends two, who have connection with the council and are familiar with the working of the criminal justice system.

‘Would I’ I enquired ‘incur the full wrath, fury and might of the the judiciary for such an act of wanton misuse of council property?’

‘No,’ they replied one adding ‘they’re got bigger fish to fry’.

So, the Christmas of the Yuletide abandoned traffic cone is soon to be.

Couldn’t sleep during the night as I had slept through the evening, so I got up and made tea. I found the address of Waterside Chess Club and noted when it is held on my organiser. Wrote a to do list for today.

(1)	Find times for Waterside Chess club and put them on my organiser (done)
(2)	Buy Batteries for hearing aid.
(3)	Cook vegetable curry. (Done)
(4)	Intended to buy green spray paint Poundland but when I got to Southampton it wasn’t in stock. Tried the Works but no joy there either.
(5)	Set up online banking……. go to Southampton. (done)
(6)	Waterside Art Club (didn’t go I was really tired when I came home and didn’t go out again)
(7)	Housework
(8)	Work out expenses for Ivor the Unique Artist (I just need the cost of setting up the blog with Site 123)

Continued without sleep but feeling good and creative. And decided to work on my Waterside churches business idea. The easiest way to do it would be to visit each of them and take photos. And do a series of paintings based on the photos. I caught the bus to Hythe, photographed St. John and asked about putting one of my sketch portraits posters on their display board.

I asked in the library and there was a change of £20/month to display an A4 poster on their board. Next asked in Hythe Community Centre about their notice board and have left a poster for consideration.

Before going I made a list of seven Waterside Churches to be photographed and painted.

(If the project, makes a profit I will use the money to cultivate my garden to grow vegetables.)

Today, I photographed St John in Hythe, meant to photograph St Andrews in Dibden Purlieu (which I forgot) buy a tin of green spray paint for plastic in Poundland in Southampton but they didn’t have any in stock I tried the Works, but they didn’t have any either.

Got my online banking sorted out.

Tiredness dogged me -on the bus into Southampton and back- at several points in the journeys I didn’t know where I was because I had fallen asleep.

Got home slept, continued sorting out the balance for putting on my exhibition and cooked a vegetable curry.

I hadn’t slept well last night and had a sleep through the until about 10.00. The first thing to do is take my clothes to the laundrette so I could change into clean clothes after my shower. And put one of my Sketch Portrait Posters in my rucksack to be displayed on the notice board in the laundrette. But I got distracted. I saw Glen in his car again from my kitchen window. The car was full to the brim with an assortment of curiosities, or to the untutored eye junk. I went over he wound his window down and told him he was included in yesterday’s Gallivant we had a chat about the Festive Traffic cone project. He said it could be used to funnel water. I mentioned Kathys witches hat idea he said it would be too heavy. I considered using my angle grinder to get its weight down. He said it would clog up the blades. I agreed it wasn’t a practical idea. Later in the laundrette I mulled over the witches hat idea and thought why not use the cone as a template for a papier-mâché witches hat? (The witches hats ideas don’t really appeal) It was Richards Bootleg Art Club Zoom Meeting- he told me he’d had the idea of gluing pictures from magazines onto cards and asked if that was art. I said yes of course it involves selecting the images arranging on the paper and so on. Later on I thought, but of course it would be collage the French stick I will do a Google search and put a link into an article for him.

Midway through another week and at 1.30am I’m wide awake and bouncing with energy. I added captions to the picture of St. John’s and wondered what other distortions and corrections are available with my iPad.

To Do List
(1)	Get can of green spray paint (done)
(2)	Get foil trays (the big Coop) (done)
(3) Email Clare about selling ‘Buffoon Designs’
(4)	Check out effects on iPad. (Done)
(5)	Buy cheese, pork chops, chestnut, mushrooms, apples and a foil tray from the Coop and double back on myself for the spray paint. (Done)
(6)	Email Herald and Advertiser about my blog

After I while I went back to bed and slept through until just before my alarm sounded at 7.00.

As I was eating breakfast I thought about when I could buy the green spray paint for my ‘Festive Traffic Cone’ and checked the opening times for Cobra Motor (8.30 am) and Holbury Hardware (9.00am) and the Coop (7.00am)

My plan was to buy the cheese, pork chops, chestnut mushrooms, and foil trays in the large Coop and double back on myself for the spray paint at Cobra Motor Supplies. The tin I bought was the last one in stock.

From 7.00am until a little after 8.00am I worked on making plans for the day and working out how much I would make from selling ‘The Buffoon Designs Book of Mostly Comic Verse’ at October Books.

It cost me each £5.32 to print each of them and if them sold at £8.32 each.
(£3/book profit)

And all five were sold i would make £15 profit.

I was alarmed how poor my maths is when I worked this out it took ages, and I’m not sure it’s right.

Today is cold and wet, I looked at the weather forecast for a fine day to spray the cone. Sunday is the most promising.

Friday October 20, 2023

Another week gone; I stayed in bed beyond when my alarm went off. The weather was unexpectedly good, and I decided to do the photos for All Saints Church in Fawley and before I went there have a quick much needed shower.

Waiting at the bus stop a dog barked loudly at me as he passed on a lead with his owner, this was the second or third time it had happened, and the owner and I expressed our amusement about it.

I got off the bus at Fawley village and finding All Saints was easy. I walked round the church taking photos and as I took them remembered my deceased friend Diane had by asking for a picture of St. Andrews her church, given me the idea for the project.

A friend helping me from the other side of the grave, or just me putting an old memory to good use? Whatever the case it would turn out to be an enjoyable project which might help towards getting my garden in shape.

I was thirsty and went for a coffee in The Falcon Inn which I drink in the salon bar, which was quiet, just the way I like it.

After taking the photos I walked back via the gulf course and tried a vegan burger with chips and a coffee in KFC as I wanted to use their toilet. It wasn’t an unpleasant snack- with the burger heavily flavoured with pepper.

When I got home, I ate a portion of vegetable curry with a piece of Nan bread. The rain began again, I was pleased to have made use of today’s game weather and done some more towards the Waterside Churches Project.

To Do List
(1)	Salty dogs' sea shanties- St James Street Methodist Church (3pm- 4pm) …don’t go.
(2)	The Soul café (10-12) … didn’t go.
(3)	Tidy papers in my living room

Unable to sleep again rather than lying in bed frustrating myself I got up and started to make an impression on my living room by sorting through some papers and throwing loads of them away.

Last night I used up all my medication except the sodium valproate (for my epilepsy). By about mid-morning I ran to Boots and got some more. Feeling really tired I thought it wisest to skip The Soul Café this morning and have a nap until lunchtime when I could set off to see the salty sea dogs.

I woke at 3pm, too late to see the salty sea dogs. A lot of my life has been a series of unrealised ambitions and unfulfilled plans, but at that moment I was content to let things be.

I made my evening meal which I had planned for some time- a pork steak with onion, mushrooms, and mixed vegetables cooked in white wine vinegar thickened with flour and a jacket potato which was followed by a cup of tea. It was the first time I’d cooked pork with white wine vinegar another novel edition to my menu.

In the evening I wrote a piece of verse.

In the needless hurry and never-ending, hectic rush of your workaday world,
Each fleeting moment comes and goes and is neither caged nor held.
Your days will soon go- so please cherish them whilst you can,
Rather than going through life without- reason, thought or plan.
Make haste, not to waste a single drop of time.
And remember each instance can bring you a step closer to the sublime.
Your mood may change in the twinkling of an eye,
With yesterday's hallo becoming todays goodbye
(Yes, yes alright! - but let me sleep)

Sunday October 22, 2023

The alarm went off- I ignored it for a while and then got up. It was cold but the sun shone brightly I had a ham sandwich, an apple and a cup of tea.

‘How best to put this day to good use?’
I wondered as I drank my tea.

First, write a ‘to do list’ I decided.

To Do list
(1)	Continue working the housework.
(2)	Do some more to my painting.
(3)	Spray the traffic cone for the Christmas Tree project.
(4)	Do some shopping in Hythe (done)

I did some homework for a few minutes but without any zeal. The place looks a mess, and I don’t care. I’m in a state of suspended animation just sat with my tea. In need enthusiasm, passion, zeal, energy, vitality, and get up and go.

Time to write a few lines of doggerel, I decided.

Sitters around moaning will get me nowhere….
I can’t even muster any real disappear.
Just finishing my utterances with
Yeah, yeah yeah.

(Hum I feel better for that)

After a while I snapped out of it and went to Hythe to get some shopping. The weather was superb, and I walked past Alfalfa and decided to venture inside. I did and had a Dialonia Pizza with salad and boy it was good. After my meal I waddled on to Lidl and did some more shopping, I wanted to make some ratatouille and Bobotie and bought the appropriate ingredients, plus tins of soup, granola and apples.

When I got home, I sprayed the abandoned traffic cone green and it’s now looking just like (well almost like) a mini- Christmas tree.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Tuesday October 24, 2023 It was the day of my blood test. To save time and keep me fit I ran to Blackfield Health Centre, on my way I passed Julie’s bungalow, and she called me from her garden, and invited me in for a coffee. As my appointment was soon, I passed up the invitation but agreed to come back again later in the morning. My appointment didn’t go to plan the nurse asked if I had eaten anything. I replied I’d had a spoonful of granola before coming out. (I had forgotten it was a fasting blood test) … appointment has been rescheduled for tomorrow. On my way back I dropped in at Julie’s and we had coffee and a Kit Cat. On my way-out Julie gave me some runner beans fresh from her garden- I don’t normally have runner beans and wasn’t sure what to do with them (they will make a nice change) When I got home, I slept through the afternoon and air fried a chicken thigh which I ate with a jacket potato and mixed vegetables and garlic pickle. Waterside Art Group was scheduled for this evening, but I gave it a miss again. Looked up runner bean recipes and blanched the ones I’d been given today for freezing, by following a YouTube video. I’m not sure how I’m going to use them. There was a piece on my newsfeed about Van Gogh which caused me to check his age when he died and find an article on the BBC website that questioned if he actually committed suicide after all. After sleeping through the afternoon, I was wide awake in the evening, and it looked like my sleep patterns were going to be disrupted again.

Wednesday October 25, 2023

It was cold and damp when I woke up this morning. The rheumatism in my right knee and ankle ached. It had been cold the previous night and unable to sleep I’d found another blanket. Finally, after some deliberation I got up for a blood test in Blackfield.

I ran to save time and for exercise and arrived in good time. After my blood test I had breakfast at Wendy’s Café and caught the bus home. And ran from the bus stop to my bungalow.

I felt great after my run and thought about what to do with the rest of the day and the weekend. I could think of loads of things I should do that were interesting and important but nothing that I wanted to do. Before I knew it the morning had gently turned into afternoon, and I had nothing to show for the time which had passed. ‘Who says it’s so marvellous to spend your time productively?’ I wondered.

Clearly, I just wasn’t in the mood to goad myself into action. An entirely normal state of affairs. ‘What’s the point in keep on, keeping on?’ There was no one to nag me, whatever I did it was okay.

But I wanted to do something. (Well theoretically)

‘I shall seek out fun and adventure’. I decided but the question was how to go about it on a dull Wednesday afternoon with only myself for company. My solution was trying out a new recipe from the Veg World email which I receive, and it was delicious, simple and quick to make with low cost ingredients. It consisted of a tin of better beans, a tin of chopped tomatoes, onion, garlic, chilli flakes, a vegetable stock club, oregano, salt, pepper, a splash of lemon juice, and feta cheese. And was eaten with pasta.

Cooking and eating are one of my great joys in life, and after I’d eaten and the exercise of running to the shop for the ingredients. I felt amazing.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Friday October 27, 2023 (It was another of my days when my plans weren’t accomplished.) To do list (1) One hour housework (did 27 minutes) (2) One hour painting (none done) (3) Shopping (not done) (4) Tea breaks (1 hour 13 minutes) Slept through the morning after a sleepless night and felt recked. A friend come round, and we shared chips with salt, vinegar and mayonnaise which were washed down with tea. Next, I ran to Boots to book a flu jab and much to my surprise was able to get one right away. After my jab I ran home. I sat around drinking tea with nothing from my to do list done. Going shopping would involve leaving the bungalow and catching the bus so I decided to leave that until tomorrow. Which I pondered should I do first painting or housework…if I’m remembered for anything it will be for painting and not housework…and if someone asked, ‘what do you do?’ …painting is a more interesting answer than housework. I had my evening meal, vegetable curry with brown rice and lime pickle. The lime pickle was delicious. At some point in the evening, I decided to time my activities. I had a shower and change of clothes. Which I dutifully did and settled down for another cup of tea when I finished. (I sent over 17 minutes drinking tea and daydreaming) There was housework which wouldn’t wait such as taking my clothes out of the machine and chopping up a couple of onions to go into the freezer and putting the dishes away (Spent 27 minutes on it) But the lion share of my time was spent drinking tea and daydreaming. (I hour 13 minutes)

Saturday October 28, 2023

Just before 4.00 am unable to sleep I got up and had a cup of tea with a piece of buttered toast. I wrote a piece about mindfulness to a friend and by the time I’d finished it, my tea was cold. I set up my stopwatch to see how long I spend doing things.

Off and on outside there was the sound of heavy rain on the conservatory roof, by 4.30 I was still wide awake, I slept from about 11.00 pm to 4.00 am. (Five hours) which is probably had enough rest for now.

The question was what to do next? And I decided to write a ‘To Do List’.

To Do List 28/10/2023

(1)	Write shopping list. (Done)
(2)	Work on painting (an hour) or Done.
(3)	Go to the Soul Café (didn’t go)
(4)	Do shopping. (done)
(5)	Cook an evening meal. (had a meal midday so this wasn’t necessary)
(6)	Housework (an hour) (Done)

I drank tea and ate buttered toast, wrote to a friend, and wrote some of today’s Gallivant and todays to do list and a shopping list. And checked the opening time for the Coop. (Which took 50 minutes). Drank another cup of tea, daydreamed for a while, added more to the Gallivant and ran to the Coop for milk ate breakfast. (53 minutes)
Had another cup of tea, went through what I had written so far and turned the TV on and chatted on social media but forgot to time myself. (It could have been 2 hours)

Spent ages trying to fill in a customer satisfaction survey for my local Pharmacy but eventually gave up in frustrated. It was a cold wet day I decided not to go to the Soul Café and just do my shopping. By 13.30 I was back from doing the shopping and needed a rest after carrying the shopping home.

I had a chicken curry in Be Be’s it was disappointing, and the price had gone up. But I wouldn’t cook an evening meal tonight.

As planned, I did an hour’s housework.

Absolutely shattered, I sat around for over 20 minutes fighting off sleep before taking my evening medication and doing an hour’s painting- which improved my mood and energy level a lot

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant

Monday October 30, 2023

The alarm sounded I said a three-word sentence. One of which was an expletive and got out of bed. I had a long sleep and didn’t really need any more but still I was grumpy.

It was the beginning of a new week and held new promise and hope. But I didn’t see it like that when the alarm sounded.

I saw that of my friends Rob gave me a thumbs up for my post yesterday. I asked him why because it really wasn’t an impressive effort. He replied it was a supportive gesture and he could see I was struggling. It was greatly appreciated, putting me in a better mood than I would otherwise have been. Thanks Rob.

I made myself a bacon sandwich which was washed down with the ubiquitous cup of tea or so. The thing to do was make a plan for the week, something which was neither too ambitious nor too easy, but just right.

Looking back over the past couple of days they were the story of a yo-yo. Saturday, I pushed myself too hard and Sunday I was exhausted. One of my first new week resolutions is to scrap the idea of using a stopwatch to monitor my time wasting. I think ideas like that come to me after watching TV army training documentary. Television and the media can be a bad influence, as can books, family and friends.

Experts' experts choking smokers.
Don’t you think the jokers laugh at you.

(But surely, we all need new ideas and stimulations to grow and learn. Self-improvement is a noble objective, but self-acceptance is a must)

I am ‘work in progress’, as we all are. On my good days I learn something new and useful or unlearn something I no longer need. It’s a continuous process of growth and decay.

It was an interesting trail of thought but went on too long and I was late setting out for October Books. I took my sketchbook but didn’t use it.

After lunch, I bought a few ingredients for a couple of recipes I wanted to try in Portswood and came home, where I had a Zoom meeting with Richard.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Wednesday November 1, 2023 Once again, I couldn’t sleep so got up and made tea. The first thing I remembered from yesterday was the reply from my email to the Rector of St Andrews about my Local Churches Project. He said it would be included in their weekly newsletter which has a circulation of about 250. I sent another email asking for a copy. My ongoing quest to be more adventurous with my food continued today when I bought a packet of Edamame Beans and a jar of Tahini Paste in Waitrose. These will be used in a cabbage and cashew salad recipe which I’m planning to make. I met Andy in Be Be’s for lunch and afterwards did some shopping in Lidl. My mood was low, and I didn’t know what to do about it. So, I Googled what to do and one of the suggestions was go for a run. It had just been raining which according to an episode of Michael Mosley’s Just One Thing this made it an especially good time to be outside because of the presence of negative irons is which are mood lifters. After my run I felt a lot perkier for a while. I turned the heating on, had a bowl of chicken soup and drank tea. The problem was that I was bored. I spend too much time alone but i don’t imagine there’s anyone who would be able to put up with me for long. As I wrote this, I remembered another of the tips for lifting mood ‘smile’. It said the physical act of smiling causes you to feel good. (Perhaps if I were to smile more i could find someone who would put up with me) So, here I sit with a blanket over my knee and another round my shoulders listening to the rain with a ridiculous grin on my face, but the really funny thing is it appears to be working. I listened to Jethro Tull ‘Singing all Day’ a nice jaunty little number which I haven’t heard for years. There a really good Ted Talk which I watch about creativity and play. If only I’d spent more time playing. My life would have been better, there’s no time like the present. I have become too dull and serious and should now play more.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant Friday November 3, 2023 To Do List (1) Lucie Mann coming to photograph paintings. (It’s going to be sometime next week) (2) Sort out online banking Southampton (done) (3) Write an email to St Andrews describing myself. (Done but it turned out not necessarily) (4) Make cabbage and cashew salad. (Made and eaten but with key ingredients missing) Once again, I couldn’t sleep through the night as I had slept in the early evening. I made today’s To Do List and sent Lucie a message about my plans for the day. I spotted that my friend Julie Hope had recommended a MasterClass course by Noam Chomsky called ‘Thinking for Yourself’ and I purchased it and watched. It is about how the media is controlled by Government and Big Business, and how Facebook offers the opportunity for people to reinforce their prejudices, rather than giving balanced arguments. The piece finished on a positive note that ‘All of the world’s problems can be solved if the right things are done.’ There was a phone call about getting a grant of £7000 towards the cost of a heat pump unfortunately I needed to contribute £3000 towards the cost. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the money. I would have liked a shower but with the water cut off the best I could do was boil water and wipe myself down with a j- cloth mask dipped in it. It was a slow process but when I’d finished, I felt good, and was proud of my ingenuity in dealing with the problem. With no milk for my tea, I ran to the Coop and found more bottles of water had been left on my doorstep. I think they were left because I’m on the priority list. I started watching a MasterClass about food but went to Southampton to sorted out my bank account, before finishing it. There was a queue of cars that ended at Applemore Tesco waiting for water from Applemore Leisure Centre. When I got in, I made a cabbage and cashew salad from a recipe which I got from Veg World but forgot to include spring onions, honey or maple syrup and lime juice which would have made it completely different. By the telephone was the form which I should have taken with me on Thursday for my blood test. I pinned it to my notice board and made a note to make an appointment on Monday. The email newsletter from St. Andrews mentioning the possibility of commissioning painting of local churches arrived. Perhaps someone will have one done.

Ivor’s Daily Gallivant

Sunday October 15, 2023: The Christmas of the abandoned Yuletide abandoned traffic cone.
